Three Easy Ways To Layer This Fall

When the weather turns we all start adding layers, and somewhere around the third one a lot of us stop feeling cute and start feeling bulky. We hear it at the register every fall. The good news is that the problem is almost never how many layers you have on. It is which ones you put together.

The rule is contrast. Slim with relaxed. Structured with soft. Short with long. When everything you have on is the same shape and the same thickness, you look padded. When the pieces are a little different from each other, you look put together on purpose. It does not cost a thing to do it right.

Here are three that always work. The first is a blazer over a sweater with jeans and heels. It sounds plain and it absolutely is not. A structured blazer over something soft pulls the whole thing together in a second, and the heel keeps it from feeling like an office outfit. It is a lovely girls night out look and you likely have most of it already.

The second is a nice dress with a distressed denim jacket over top, and then the little trick that makes it special. Wear a scarf as a necklace. Loop the scarf through itself the way you would a long chain, then tie it off to one side instead of the center. That off center knot adds something interesting right at your neckline and turns a simple dress into a whole outfit.

The third is a skirt with leggings underneath, a chunky sweater over it, and low boots in a combat style. It is warm, it is comfortable and it works because the heavy sweater balances the slim leg. This one takes you from school pickup to dinner without changing a thing.

Once the shapes are working, play with color a little. Sky blue and chocolate brown together is everywhere right now and it somehow acts like a neutral. Olive with a true tomato red is unexpected and sharp. Ecru, sky blue and cognac is soft and warm all at once. And butter yellow grounded with chocolate brown looks lovely on almost everybody.

Here is the practical part. Layering means owning more pieces, and that adds up quickly at regular prices. Everything here runs about 70% off retail, new arrivals come in every day, and almost nothing repeats, so the blazer or scarf you find is probably the only one we have.

And if you look in your own closet and find nicer things you never wear, bring them in. We price designer individually and pay a premium for it. You get cash on the spot, or 20% more in store credit to put toward your next layer.
