The Little Summer Hacks That Make Everything Easier

Summer is supposed to be the easy season. Long days, lazy mornings, time at the pool, dinner outside, a quick trip to the shore. But somewhere along the way, the season picks up speed and we find ourselves sweating over a cooler at 6am or running back into the house for the third time before we leave for the beach.

We've picked up a few little hacks over the years that make the whole thing easier. None of them require special equipment or a Pinterest board. Just small adjustments that take the work out of the day. Here are the ones we come back to over and over.

The first one is for the beach bag. Tuck a couple of unused dryer sheets into the bottom of your bag before you head out. When you get home, sand falls right off your towels and clothes instead of clinging to everything. It's a small thing that makes a big difference, especially when you've got little ones whose entire body somehow becomes a sandcastle by 11am.

While you're at it, swap your cute open tote for a canvas bag with a zip top. The zip keeps sand and saltwater out of your phone and your wallet. Pack a small zip bag inside for wet swimsuits and damp towels so they don't soak everything else.

For cookouts, the universal hack is the make ahead. Whatever you can prep the day before, prep the day before. Pasta salad. Coleslaw. Cut veggies. Marinated meat. Future you will love past you for doing this. The day of, your job is just to grill and greet, not to scramble in the kitchen.

If you're bringing a dish to someone else's cookout, choose something that travels well at room temperature for at least an hour. Pasta salad, fruit salad, a pan of brownies, chips and a homemade dip in a small container. Skip anything that needs to stay refrigerated or piping hot. You don't need that stress on the way over.

For day trips and shore drives, freeze a few water bottles the night before and use those instead of bagged ice in your cooler. They keep things just as cold without the melted ice mess, and they double as cold drinks for the ride home. Pack snacks that survive the heat too. Hard fruits like apples and grapes. Crackers and cheese. Granola bars. Save the chocolate for when you're back home with the AC.

For staycation days, plan just one specific thing for the morning to give the day shape. A walk in a park you don't usually go to. Coffee at a place you've been meaning to try. A trip to the farmers market. Just one anchor activity. The rest of the day fills in around it and feels intentional instead of just like another Saturday.

And for what to wear through all of this, our advice is simple. Pieces that move with you. A breezy dress that goes from cookout to ice cream after. A linen shirt that doubles as a beach coverup. Denim shorts and a tank you can throw on in five minutes. The right pieces don't need to cost a fortune, they just need to be easy.

We've been getting in the most beautiful warm weather arrivals at our Plymouth Meeting store every single day.
