Earth Day has always been about the idea that small acts matter. That one person's choice ripples outward. That we are, collectively, more powerful than we feel on any given Tuesday.
At Clothes Mentor Plymouth Meeting, that's something we think about a lot. Because what happens in our store every single day is exactly that kind of small act. A woman comes in with a bag of clothes. We pay her for them. Those clothes go back onto our racks instead of into a landfill. Someone else finds them and brings them home. The cycle continues.
It sounds simple because it is. But the scale of the problem it's addressing is anything but simple.
The fashion industry produces 100 billion garments every year. Ninety-two million tons of them end up in landfills globally. In the US, 85% of all textiles are sent to landfill annually. That's 11.3 million tons of clothing, shoes and bags just sitting in the ground. Meanwhile, the average garment gets worn only about 10 times before it's discarded. We've been consuming more and keeping things less, and the planet is feeling it.
Research from WRAP, a sustainability advisory group, found that simply extending the life of a clothing item by three months reduces its carbon, water and waste footprint by 5 to 10 percent. And buying secondhand instead of new cuts the carbon emissions of that purchase by an average of 25 percent.
These are not small numbers. And together, all of us doing this in our community add up to something real.
This Earth Day, here are three gentle, doable ways to celebrate with your closet:
Fill one small bag. You don't have to do a full closet overhaul. Just pull out one bag of things you haven't worn in a year, clothes and shoes that are still in good shape but just aren't yours anymore. Bring them to us. We'll pay you cash on the spot and put them back into the community.
Invite a friend. Sustainability is contagious in the best way. Ask someone you love to do the same. Come together, sell your stuff, spend some time. Two bags is twice the impact and twice the fun.
Shop Clothes Mentor before you buy new. The next time you're about to click buy on something new, check resale first. At up to 70% off retail, shopping secondhand at Clothes Mentor makes it easy to be both stylish and intentional. Every secondhand purchase is a small act of resistance against the throwaway culture.
We believe in women taking care of women. And we believe in small acts that add up. Earth Day feels like a good day to remember that both of those things are true.
